Tahiti is a great kiteboarding destination... although knowing the scoop on which islands are best and why, the local's favorite spots, and the realities of the local wind conditions is integral to a kick ass Tahitian kite trip. That's what this site is all about.
Although there are probably kiteable conditions on many islands we're not familiar with in French Polynesia, this site concentrates on the Society Island Archipelago, since that is where the majority of tourists, travelers and kiters go.

Polynesian Kiting Overview:
Tahitians call the sport of kiteboarding or kitesurfing "fly surfing" because of their French affiliation.
For reasons only known to them, (when you boost, you FLY?) the Tahitians have been using flysurfing as their term of choice on the islands since day one. No worries... No matter what they call it, it's the same sport we all love so much.

Overall, the kiteboarding, kitesurfing, kiteflying, and flysurfing conditions on Tahiti and her islands ARE quite excellent, but they definately vary from island to island, sometimes dramatically...

The Society Islands
of French Polynesia are commonly referred to as "Tahiti" by many, although that is a misnomer because Tahiti is really just one of over 130 different islands of the 5 seperate archipelagoes (group of islands) that comprise French Polynesia as a whole. The island of Tahiti itself just happens to be located in the Windward group of the Society Island archipelago.
In fact, Tahiti IS the largest and most famous of ALL the islands of French Polynesia and is home to its capital city of Papeete. Other Society Islands include Bora Bora, Moorea, Huahine, Raiatea, Tahaa, Maupiti, Tetiaroa, and a few others.

Tahiti is the island with the most consistant kitesurfing conditions in French Polynesia on a year round basis.
Good old Venus Point is a mainstay of the best kiters on the island, but there are many other islands, spots and conditions worthy of knowing.

The following links give kite specifics for each of the Society Islands listed: (Launch spots, local conditions, tips, what to do when the wind's NOT blowing, where to stay, and more...)

Tahiti
Bora Bora
Raiatea & Tahaa

Note: If you don't find the answers you're looking for on these pages, it may be because we just dont know the answer! We don't claim to know all the details of Tahitian kiteboarding, but merely try to be a good general guide for now... As time goes on, this site will get better and more informative.

WE'RE OPEN TO KITER'S SUGGESTIONS, EXPERIENCES AND NOTES! If you go to French Polynesia, (or live and kite there) and have a kite experience or knowledge that would help this site out, please let us know and we'll post it for the benefit of the next Tahitian bound kiter!
